Destination Description

Hear the chirrup of birds as their tweets blend into a fascinating orchestra. Listen to the buzz of insects and the croak of a Point-nosed frog. These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the sounds and sights Dooars is privy to.
Highway Dreams International’s ‘Explore Dooars’ travel package combines the best of holiday planning and jungle escape for you.
Head out to the dense forests of Chilapata this season, to groove to the wild symphony of this jungle paradise. Like our other holiday packages, this one promises a singularly enticing adventure.
Chilapata is located 28 kms from Alipurduar, and at a convenient distance from the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary at Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.
Nourished by the rich alluvial deposits brought in by the rivers, Torsha and Bania, this forest is a thriving eco-system replete with a wide variety of vegetation and wildlife.
As per local legends, this place used to be a hideout for dacoits once upon a time. However, now that threat has been quelled.
Chilapata served as a passage for the elephants between the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary and the Buxa Tiger Reserve. But it’s not just the trumpet of these majestic mammals that resounds through the forest.
Feel that adrenaline rush as you embark on a Jeep Safari into the dark recesses of this fabulous natural reserve. Keep your camera ready to click pictures of the one-horned rhino, leopards, elephants, bison, and multiple species of deers.
Among the known species of deers, the Barking Deer, the Hog Deer, and Sambar can be spotted in this area.
Different species of reptiles, snakes and bird species proliferate in this forest. Look out for the venomous King Cobra, Krait, and Indian python amid the rustling leaves and overgrown bushes.
Keep an ear out for the chitter and shrieks of birds like the Shikra, Fishing-eagle, Bengal Florican, Patridge, Racket-tail Drongo and many other species.
A riveting bit of history has left its imprint at Chilapata. If the past and stories of bygone kingdoms engross you, then the ruins of Nalraja Garh, the former kingdom of the Nal Kings, lie in the forest for you to explore.
The Nal Dynasty dates back to the Gupta age in 5th century B.C., the golden era of Indian history.
Legends about the place narrate the story of brave soldiers who transformed into trees while defending the fort from being destroyed. It is believed that they still watch over this historical relic. This tree, the ‘Ram Guna Tree’ or ‘The Bleeding Tree’, is a source of avid interest for tourists.
Jump on a boat and ride the Bania River; gorge on splendid forest views as you do so.
The Jeep Safari is almost an hour and half duration-wise and promises to be a thrill ride to get your adrenaline pumping, as you travel past the thickets and trees of this jungle, spotting your favourite animals.
However, avoid the months June to September, as the forest remains closed during that period.
If Indian tribes and their culture interests you, then mingle with the Rabha tribal villages in this area.
While you are at it, don’t forget to visit the Buxa Tiger Reserve and the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary.
The ‘Explore Dooars’ holiday package is all set to enthrall you, if you give us a chance.
